Robotic Heart Procedure for COPD and Emphysema
The Zephyr® valve procedure can help adults with emphysema and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Zephyr valves are small, one-way gates placed in select airways during a bronchoscopy procedure.
The minimally invasive treatment allows trapped air to be exhaled from the lungs and prevents air from becoming trapped.
COPD and emphysema are progressive lung disorders that make it challenging to breathe or catch your breath. The most common symptoms are frequent shortness of breath, wheezing and chronic coughing.
Robotic Zephyr program helps patients breathe
After a series of clinical tests, a specially trained interventional cardiologist can determine if you’re a candidate for the minimally invasive robotic procedure.
Zephyr - what to expect
- After anesthesia, the surgeon inserts a small tube with a camera through the patient’s nose or mouth. Through this bronchoscope, they can see deeply into the lungs.
- If needed, the surgeon can place up to four new valves within the airways, depending on risk factors.
- Many patients remain in the hospital for up to three nights to be continuously monitored for complications.
- After the procedure, you’ll continue the medicine and regimen your doctor prescribes.
