“Activate America” is the YMCA of Southern Nevada’s response to the community’s growing health crisis: childhood obesity. They are engaging YMCA facilities across the valley to better support members and residents of all ages who are struggling to achieve and maintain well-being of spirit, mind and body. That is why the YMCA is teaming up with Centennial Hills Hospital Medical Center to address childhood obesity and promote active, healthy lifestyles.
This initiative will promote and provide resources to YMCA members and Centennial Hills Hospital patients to encourage a transformation in Southern Nevada.
Alarming facts about childhood obesity:
- In the last ten years, obesity rates in the United States have increased 60%.
- The current generation of American children could be the first to lead shorter lives than their parents, according to the New England Journal of Medicine due to obesity-related illnesses and conditions.
- More than 50% of U.S. adults do not get enough physical activity to make a difference in their health.
- Health problems related to obesity cost our country an estimated $117 billion per year due in direct healthcare costs and indirect economic costs of lost productivity.
The YMCA and Centennial Hills Hospital partnership will give the community tools to achieve an optimal level of health and fitness through shared services and medical and nutrition experts. Both organizations are committed to a positive outcome and have dedicated ongoing activities.
“We are happy to be a part of this new campaign with YMCA of Southern Nevada. We support initiatives in our community that are geared towards promoting active healthier lifestyles for people of all ages,” said Kevin Stockton, the CEO/Managing Director of Centennial Hills Hospital.
