Cardiac catheterization involves the use of radiological equipment to diagnose heart disease. Interventional tools such as balloons and stents are fed through a catheter into the coronary arteries to reduce stenosis (blockages) and improve blood flow.

The following procedures are performed at Centennial Hills Hospital:

Left Heart Cath
Contrast is injected into the coronary arteries to diagnose blockages.

Right Heart Cath
Measures pressures within the chambers of the heart.

Permanent Pacemaker/AICD Implants
Implantation of permanent pacemakers (single, dual, and BiV leads) and Automatic Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillators (AICDs) used for cardiac rhythm management.

Intravascular Ultrasound (IVUS)
An intravascular ultrasound catheter is used to assess severity of arterial blockage.

Angioplasty and Stenting
Coronary interventions used to open blockages in the coronary arteries.

Echo
Echocardiography services include transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiograms (TEE) with multi-plane probe. Inpatient and outpatient services are available.

Cardiology images are available through cardiology PACS, which can be viewed by physicians inside the hospital or remotely using a secure Internet connection.

Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) occurs when plaque builds up in the blood vessels and restricts blood flow. Left untreated, PAD can cause pain in the legs and feet, and can lead to aortic aneurysms, lower extremity ischemia (insufficient blood flow) or even death. PAD is more common than most people realize and is a serious risk factor for about 10 million Americans.

PAD affects about one in 20 Americans over age 50, and the chances of having it increase with age. Many people with PVD do not experience any signs or symptoms, but signs of possible PVD include:

• Cramps in the leg muscles (calf, thighs or buttocks) during activity, such as walking or climbing stairs.
• Sores or wounds on toes, feet or legs.
• One leg that feels noticeably colder than the other leg.
• Discolored skin on the foot or leg.

Who Is At Risk for PVD
The major risks factors for PVD are age, smoking and having one or more of a number of medical conditions, including:

• Diabetes.
• High blood pressure, or a family history of it.
• High cholesterol levels, or a family history of it.
• Heart disease, or a family history of it.
• Personal or family history of stroke.
